The Simplest Possible Explanation
Claude Cowork is a desktop AI agent. You install it on your Mac or PC. Once it is running, it can see your files, your applications, and your screen — and it can take actions on your behalf.
You tell it what you need in plain English. It does the work.
That is the complete summary. Everything else in this guide is just unpacking what that actually means in practice.
Who Made Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is made by Anthropic, an AI safety company founded in 2021. Anthropic is also the company behind Claude — the AI assistant you may have used at claude.ai. If you already use Claude at claude.ai, your login credentials are the same.
Anthropic was founded by former members of OpenAI, including Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei. The company's focus from the start has been on building AI that is safe, honest, and interpretable.
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic product: the version of Claude that does not just answer questions but takes action in the world.
How Is Claude Cowork Different from Claude in the Browser?
If you have used Claude at claude.ai, you already understand what a chat-based AI assistant feels like. You type a message, Claude responds, you copy the output, you paste it somewhere, and you do something with it.
That workflow has value — but notice how much of the work is still being done by you. You are the one moving between tabs, finding the file, copying, pasting, formatting, saving, and filing the output.
Claude Cowork closes that gap. Instead of you acting on Claude's output, Claude Cowork acts on your behalf — directly, on your computer. This is the distinction between a language model (answers questions) and an AI agent (takes action). For a direct comparison between the two products, read: Claude Cowork vs Claude.
What Can Claude Cowork Actually Do?
Claude Cowork handles document work such as reading a brief and producing a full first draft in your voice, summarising long reports into one-page executive summaries, reformatting documents from one template to another, and proofreading with your house style guide applied consistently.
For email and communication, it can triage your inbox by priority, draft reply templates for recurring email categories, and write first drafts in your tone by pulling context from attached files.
It also handles data and reporting — pulling data from spreadsheets, running calculations, and producing formatted reports. For a full breakdown of what non-technical professionals build with it, see: Claude Cowork Workflows.
What Claude Cowork Cannot Do
Claude Cowork cannot access the internet in real time. It works with files and applications already on your computer. It also cannot replace your judgment on high-stakes decisions — it can draft a performance review, but the actual assessment of a person's growth is yours.
Its output quality depends on input quality. The clearer and more specific your instructions, the better your outputs. This is a skill — and it is one of the core things we teach in Claude Cowork Training.
It is not a fully autonomous background process out of the box. You give it tasks and it completes them. Scheduled or autonomous workflows require specific setup.
Is It Safe to Use for Work?
Anthropic has designed Claude Cowork with privacy guardrails built in. When you use Cowork on a paid plan, the data you provide is not used to train Anthropic's models by default. Your files remain on your device, and Cowork does not send your documents to a public server without your knowledge.
If you are a corporate user handling sensitive client data, personally identifiable information, or regulated financial records, you should review Anthropic's enterprise data policy and confirm with your IT or legal team before use.
For teams and enterprise deployments in Singapore, our Enterprise AI Training programme covers data compliance as part of the curriculum.
How Do You Get Started?
Step 1: understand what you are getting into — you are already doing this by reading this page. Step 2: set it up properly using our Claude Cowork Setup Guide, which walks you through setup step by step for non-technical users.
Step 3: build your first workflow. The fastest way to see real value is to pick one repetitive task in your current job and automate it completely. Our Claude Cowork Workflows guide shows you how to do this from scratch.
Step 4: get trained. Reading guides helps. But structured training — especially in a hands-on, role-specific format — is what creates lasting behaviour change. See Claude Cowork Workshop Singapore for available dates.
Start with the right setup
