Claude Cowork vs Claude

Both are made by Anthropic. Both understand plain English. So why are there two products?

Comparison

The One-Line Summary

Claude is a conversation. Claude Cowork is an action.

Claude talks with you. Claude Cowork works for you. Everything else in this guide unpacks that distinction.

What Claude (Browser) Does

Claude at claude.ai is a large language model interface. You open a browser tab, type a message, and Claude responds. It can answer questions, help you think through problems, draft text, summarise documents you paste in, write code, and translate content.

But notice the workflow it requires: you open claude.ai, copy content from somewhere and paste it in, Claude responds, you copy the output, go back to wherever you were working, paste the output, and do something with it. You are the bridge between Claude and your actual work. Claude produces language. You do everything else.

It is genuinely excellent at what it does — and for one-off conversational tasks, it remains the right tool.

What Claude Cowork Does Differently

Claude Cowork is a desktop application that runs on your computer. It has direct access to your files, your applications, and your screen — with your permission. The step where you are the bridge disappears.

Instead of you copying a document into Claude, Cowork opens the document itself. Instead of you pasting Claude's output into a file, Cowork writes the output directly to the file. The underlying intelligence is the same — both products are powered by Claude's models. What is different is the scope of action.

Claude answers. Claude Cowork executes.

The Same Task, Both Tools Applied

Task: Summarise a report and email the summary to a colleague.

With Claude (browser): open the report, open claude.ai, copy the report text and paste it in, ask Claude to summarise, copy the summary, open your email client, paste the summary, address and send. Eight or more steps, all involving you.

With Claude Cowork: tell Cowork "Summarise the report in my Downloads folder called Q1-Review.pdf and email the summary to [colleague's name]." One step. The rest is Cowork.

When Claude (Browser) Is Still the Right Tool

Claude in the browser is excellent as a thinking partner — working through a strategic problem, pressure-testing an argument, brainstorming options, getting feedback on a piece of writing. These are conversational tasks where the back-and-forth chat format is ideal.

It is also better when you are on mobile (Cowork is desktop only) or on a free budget (Cowork requires a paid plan).

Most professionals who use Claude Cowork still use Claude in the browser for conversational and exploratory work. They are not competing products — they are different tools for different modes of working.

When Claude Cowork Is the Clear Winner

Once your work involves repetitive multi-step tasks, local files, tasks that span multiple applications, or high-volume document processing — Claude Cowork is the more appropriate tool.

If you want AI that works the same way every time, not just when you remember to open a tab and paste something in, you need an agent. Cowork lets you build dependable, repeatable systems around your work.
